For AI products
the model is the easy part.
You shipped the thing that answers. What you have not shipped is a consistent way to say “still thinking”, “I looked that up”, “that tool failed”, or “I am not sure about this one” — and those four sentences are most of what your interface says all day.
Six months in, the fourth engineer to build a streaming response has invented their own loading state, their own way to show a tool call, and their own apology when the model gets it wrong. You end up with four interfaces wearing the same colour. I design the system that stops that and write the components that enforce it.
Patterns most systems don't have
- streaming text and partial states
- tool calls — running, succeeded, failed
- citations and source attribution
- retry, regenerate, undo
- confidence and uncertainty
- being wrong, visibly, without panic
- empty, loading, rate-limited
- long-running and background jobs
why a normal design system doesn’t cover it.
A component library assumes the interface knows the answer before it renders. A model-backed one does not: the response arrives a token at a time, might cite something, might call a tool that fails, and might be confidently wrong. Every one of those is a state that needs a design decision, and none of them appear in a kit built around buttons, cards and modals.
Almost nobody sells this. That is not a claim about quality — it is that the category is three years old and most systems were designed before it existed.
